Inner Order

Bast Temple is overseen by the B.I.O.R.C., a Second Order based upon both written and oral Roseae Rubae et Aureae Crucis material. The written material includes the Z-Papers.

Overview of the Inner Order Curriculum

Portal: The Grade of Portal is the probationary entrance grade of Inner Order (just like the Grade of Neophyte is the probationary Grade of Outer Order). The primary task of the Portal member is to write their thesis detailing the understanding of the Outer Order rituals.

Adept Minor Neophyte (AMN): Constructs and consecrates their elemental tools, sword and lotus wand. Receives and starts to study select Inner Order papers and rituals.

Adept Minor Zelator (ZAM): The primary task of a member of the ZAM subgrade is to gain a deeper understanding of the energies and symbolism underlying the Neophyte ritual. This task takes approximately a year to complete; the studying of the Outer Order rituals is so important that a member has to be at least a ZAM before they can be elected to the office of Hierophant.

Adeptus Minor Theoricus (THAM): The member of the THAM subgrade starts to study the deeper layers of the Zelator ritual. They also start to study Enochian Chess.

The Adept Minor Grade has three more subGrades, each of which focuses on one of the Outer Order rituals.

Adeptus Major: Studies the symbolism of the Portal Grade ritual, besides practicing the Art of the Sword.

Adeptus Extemptus: Studies the symbolism of the Adept Minor ritual, besides examining the details of the Vault of the Adepti.

Why Hasn’t the B.I.O.R.C. Moved All the Published Material To Outer Order?

Question: Given the fact that many of today’s Golden Dawn based Orders have moved all the published Golden Dawn material to Outer Order, why hasn’t the B.I.O.R.C. followed suit?

Answer: While it is true that several Golden Dawn based Orders have moved all the published Golden Dawn material into Outer Order, not all the Golden Dawn based Orders have followed the call to reform the Golden Dawn curriculum. In fact, the purpose of the curriculum reform seems to be more concerned with reestablishing the rule of absolute secrecy over the Inner Order curriculum, rather than what is best for the students of the system.

While it is true that originally there was meant to be a veil of absolute secrecy over the Inner Order material, moving the published Inner Order material to Outer Order to create absolute secrecy for the Inner Order material requires Outer Order students to be do advanced magical work before they have learned the foundations of the symbolism underlying the system.

It also ignores the fact that Inner Order rituals, such as the ones outlined in the Z2, were meant to be carried out by “Vaulted” Adepts. Much of the power and authority of an Adept rests in the fact that they have a link to the Vault of their respective Order. While it is true that a non-vaulted member can do the rituals, it requires a lot of skill and the switching of “hats” to compensate for the energies that a Vaulted Adept can just naturally channel due to their link with the Vault of the Adepts.
